B-CU Continues to Expand Academics and Scholarship Opportunities for for Military Students

For the past several months, Bethune-Cookman University has worked on numerous military academic initiatives such as: GEM; FLYCA; DANTES/DSST; Minuteman Scholarship; Military Training Credits; and more to enhance opportunities for students in the military to attend college. B-Cu has enrolled approximately 169 military students on campus and online. Currently, Mr. Alli Braswell, Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA) has collaborated with Military Affairs and B-CU Global Online College to draw together the military presence as an academic and leadership option for young people in African-American community. For the fall 2017 semester, three students have been selected by CASA Braswell to receive the Minuteman Scholarship.  The opportunity is inclusive of four years of full tuition and fees or $10,000 for room and board at colleges and universities served by an Army ROTC program. The students will also receive a monthly stipend of $300 to $500, and a yearly book allowance of $1,200. Additionally, each student will experience working with an Army Reserve unit while earning additional money for their service.

Furthermore, B-CU will host a women’s empowerment breakfast with keynote speaker and one of the most senior ranked African-American women in the U.S. Military, Lieutenant General Gwen Bingham during the month of September. University administrators and faculty will also attend the Association of United States Army Reception for Lieutenant Bingham in Orlando during that month, which will bring together elected officials: Mayor of Orlando Buddy Dyer; Mayor of Windermere Gary Broome; Mayor of Orange County Teresa Jacobs and many more.

Since 2015, military enrollment has increased with the pledge to provide active duty military personnel with discounted tuition rates. For two consecutive years, B-CU has been selected as a Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds, and publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM JobsSM and Military Spouse.
