February 9, 2016 – Daytona Beach, Fla.-The 1st Annual Bethune-Cookman University Legends Archival Induction Ceremony was held recently at the Carl S. Swisher Library. The event honored Dr. Cleo Higgins. Dr. Higgins was honored for donating some of her memorabilia and awards received throughout her career to the Bethune-Cookman University Archives Department. 


Following Bethune-Cookman tradition, the event began with an opening prayer followed by a video broadcast which showcased some of the highlights of Dr. Higgins’ career.  The standing room only event was a complete surprise for the 92 yrs. old, who is credited for creating the Bethune-Cookman University seal. During the ceremony, Dr. Higgins shared some of her personal thoughts about the growth of Bethune- Cookman University.  “I was so glad to be a part of the change,” stated Dr. Higgins when she shared some of her personal reflections about her career.  

“I feel like I should give back the gifts that were given to me,” said Dr. Cleo Higgins when asked about why she chose to donate her mementos.
The items donated by Dr. Higgins are currently on display on the second floor of the Carl S. Swisher Library located on the campus of Bethune-Cookman University.
