The Bethune-Cookman Search Committee held two days of confidential interviews off campus to screen the large pool of applicants for its next President. The committee selected three persons to be advanced in the search along with an alternate, all of whom were deemed qualified for the position. After consultation with candidates, three persons have been invited to the campus for open interviews, with campus constituencies, during the last week of January. These visits will be communicated to the campus and there will be opportunities for campus personnel, students, alumni, faculty, and trustees to meet with the candidates. An electronic survey will be provided for those wishing to share their comments on the candidates with the committee. Background checks and further referencing was initiated on the finalist. The Search Committee hopes to have a recommendation for the Board of Trustees in early February. The Search Committee seeks the cooperation of all campus persons to welcome the candidates and assist them as they evaluate their commitment to the position as well as to share evaluation comments with the committee.

November 2018 Presidential Search Update

The Presidential Search Committee met on November 9, 2018 from 2:00 PM until 3:45 PM in the Board Room. The meeting was preceded by a meeting with the Committee C0-Chair Trustee Reverend Dr. Tom Shafer and newly appointed faculty and staff committee members to orient them to the work of the Search Committee.

The meeting was called to order with all members, including those engaged by conference call at 2:10 PM. Dr. Shafer led the Committee in Opening Prayer, the reading of the Bethune-Cookman Mission, and the recitation of the Covenant developed for the Presidential Search Committee.

Dr. Carlton Brown, Executive Search Consultant for AGB, discussed the placement of the Presidential Search within the B-CU website. He asserted the necessity to place a link very prominently on the home page so that any inquirer would be able to access the search pages immediately. Staff and administrators present committed to make adjustments.

Issues of font consistency and text correctness were raised about the published Presidential Profile. AGB committed that its staff would review the comments and recommendations and make appropriate corrections ASAP.

Dr. Brown then led Committee members in instructions to access the Search Committee’s confidential AGB search location to begin their review of applications and nominations. He shared with them an informal search tool that committee members may choose to use to facilitate their individual review of applications and beginning assessments of candidacy. Together, the committee selected several applications to review together to enable appropriate review and to learn how to look at various aspects of an applicant’s file.

Both Dr. Brown and Co-Chair Shafer, stressed the critical importance of strict confidentiality in all work and deliberations of the Presidential Search Committee.

October 2018 Presidential Search Update

The Search Committee met on October 11, 2018, for two and a half hours to finalize a draft of the Presidential Search Profile and Ad for the position. The AGB consultants had spent two days on campus in September and used campus documents, publications, and extensive interviews to formulate a draft document for the Committee members to revise and edit. The work was completed on the documents and the B-CU Public relations office agreed to arrange for the layout and design of the Profile consistent with university standards. The document will be shared electronically throughout the campus and to all constituencies. The ad will be placed in the Chronicle of Higher Education and numerous publications and electronic sites.

The committee started with prayer and recitation of the purpose and covenant that will guide their work. The schedule of future meetings was reviewed and members were reminded that attendance is very important and necessary to achieve our goal of getting the best leader possible for the 7th president of the university.
